What Is Digital Retinal Imaging?

Digital retinal imaging captures detailed pictures of the retina, the light-sensitive tissue at the back of the eye. At our San Diego office, we offer Optos digital retinal imaging, which provides a wide-field view of the retina and allows us to compare images from one visit to the next.

Having a documented image of your retina can make subtle changes easier to monitor over time. The process is quick and non-invasive, giving us valuable information about areas of the eye that cannot be evaluated by simply checking how clearly you can see.

Retinal imaging can help us look for changes associated with:

How Is a Dilated Eye Exam Different?

During a dilated eye exam, special eye drops temporarily enlarge the pupils. This allows us to examine the internal structures of the eye more thoroughly and view areas that may not be fully assessed through an undilated pupil.

Dilation gives your eye doctor a real-time, three-dimensional view of the retina, optic nerve, blood vessels, and other structures inside the eye. Depending on your age, medical history, symptoms, risk factors, and what we observe during your exam, dilation can be an important part of evaluating your eye health.

Do You Need Retinal Imaging or Dilation?

In many cases, the answer is both. Digital retinal imaging and a dilated eye exam provide different types of information, which means one does not automatically replace the other. Retinal images give us a detailed visual record that can be saved and compared over time, while dilation allows us to directly examine the inside of the eye and investigate areas of concern from different angles.

Using both when appropriate gives us a more complete picture of your retinal health. If an image shows something unusual, dilation may be recommended for a closer examination. Likewise, retinal imaging can provide useful documentation of findings seen during a dilated exam.
